I currently lead my own classroom as a T.A. in Applied Lingusitics. I teach Academic Writing to UCLA’s international/English as a Second Language students. Maestro de Inglés – Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 2002-2006

Web Editor – UTSA Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, 2004-2006     

At the University of Texas at San Antonio, as a member of the faculty website committee, I designed and coordinated content about academic programs. Wayne Wright, Ph.D., (210) 458 4426.

I served also as web editor and lead designer of PoliMemos (utsa.edu/PoliMemos), a research hub on Latina/os and higher education, focused on opportunity and retention. PoliMemos is operated by UTSA’s College of Education, and funded by the Lumina Foundation. Raymond Padilla, Ph.D.

Ethnographer – UTSA Culture and Policy Institute, 2004-2005     

As part of my graduate assistantship, I observed and documented meetings and events. CPI enabled community in the Westside of San Antonio. These bilingual neighborhood non-profits fight for education, safety, health, and economic opportunity. Ultimately, our research helped many become self-sufficient advocates. ·       Compile data (SPSS, NVivo, ArcView) and reports on leadership, social capital, bicultural communications

·       Work with residents and the Annie E. Casey Foundation to strengthen social networks and overcome bureaucracy

 

English as a Second Language Instructor – San Antonio College, 2002-2003     

These medium to large classes catered to students from México and other countries. I taught grammar at every level. My supervisor: Anelia Luna, Continuing Education Director, (210) 733 2662.

·       Manage, guide and evaluate 3 classes at once, accounting for various student needs

·       Create long-range lesson plans, coordinate class progress with other instructors

 

Volunteer Teacher – El Puente de Esperanza, I.A.P., 2001

El Puente is a charity in Querétaro, México, helping distressed indigenous families. I worked 40 hours per week from January until December 2001. I cared for and taught the Spanish alphabet to children, maintained our house and computers, and tutored High School students in English. Conchita Walker, Executive Director, (907) 945 3285 in USA.

·       Turned mountainous clay-rock into a large vegetable garden; designed and built 4 solar-powered ovens

 

English Teacher – Idiomas Lincoln School, 2001

I taught English part-time to middle-class Mexican teenagers and adults. The small classes centered on conversation skills. I developed a course teaching English pronunciation. Petrina Soto, Director (52)(442) 216 7955.

 

Interim Art Director/Production Associate – Business First of Columbus, 1998-2000, 2002     

I developed ad campaigns and managed ads appearing in this newspaper, an award-winning subsidiary of American City Business Journals. Before 2000, I handled design, layout, and proof-reading of editorial content. Rick Titus, Production Manager; Don DePerro, Publisher (614) 461 4040.

·       Worked closely with advertising representatives to create dynamic advertisements and assure quality

·       Installed and maintained computers, assessed software needs, implemented cross-platform networking

 

Desktop Publisher – BCT Central Ohio, 1996-1998

I initiated Business Cards Tomorrow’s label program. I designed and typeset while operating a small four-color press.

 

Desktop Publisher – AB Specialty Packaging, 1995-1996

I created high-end designs for this bilingual bag manufacturer in Hialeah, Florida.

·    Master of Arts: The University of Texas at San Antonio; Cumulative 4.0 GPA; Master of Arts in Bicultural/Bilingual Studies; focus on linguistic and social aspects of national identity and immigration (2003-06).

       ·   Master's thesis: The Alamo 2004: Everybody in Texas is Going (2006). I semiotically analyze Disney's box-office bomb, The Alamo, and the sociocultural issues which make Texas' creation myth an increasingly irrelevant symbol of the "nation."

·     Bachelor of Arts: The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; Cumulative 3.8 GPA; Summa Cum Laude, With Honors in the Liberal Arts, and With Distinction in English (1993-98).

       ·   Honors thesis: Chernobylna Khronika (1998). In the former Soviet Union, I researched the social aftermath of the Chernobyl Accident.

·    Scholarships: UCLA University Fellowship (2006-07); UTSA Graduate Assistantship (2004-06); OSU Scarlet and Gray Scholarship (1994); OSU Arts and Sciences Honors Research Scholarship (1996)

·    Honors: Phi Beta Kappa; Alpha Lambda Delta; Phi Kappa Phi. 12 consecutive quarters on the Dean’s List at OSU; OSU Honors Program; Excellence in Scholarship Awards (1996 & 1997); elected as Student Representative to the English Department’s Executive Committee.

I served on the Board of Directors (2003-06) for San Antonio Phi Beta Kappa. We cultivated academic excellence at local high schools, through visiting speakers and $1000 scholarships. I volunteered (and occasionally performed) for 4 years with Jump-Start Performance Company and Guadalupe Theater. I mentored with Communities in Schools, in the Westside of San Antonio.

I am webmaster of several websites. TAKS Boycott Association (taksboycott.blogspot.com) is a political initiative to improve public school assessment in Texas. I built an engaging site devoted to Zora Neale Hurston, renowned novelist and anthropologist. Since 1995, it has garnered many awards, and averages 800 visitors per week. I design and maintain AmaliaOrtiz.com (performance poet) and Bridgeport Drafting & Home Design.

My communication skills are excellent. I have a decade of experience with dozens of computer programs. I speak fluent Spanish and type 50 words per minute.
